Resources

  • Books are a wonderful resource!  I remember growing up my mum always used to say "its never too early to start reading to your kids".  I ordered some great books off Amazon that will be fantastic come September.  To be honest, I've been using them too!

  • Flashcards have been my saviour!  I was making flashcards for Robs son one day to help him learn to read.  I could see how well he was responding to them, so it dawned on me that maybe I could do the same for myself - obviously for my Italian ;-)

I decided to sort the flashcards into categories and then store them in zip lock bags:
         - Body parts
         - Verb conjugation
         - Small talk
         - In the Kitchen
         - Food
         - Date and Time
*Only after I've learnt a topic, I create a new one - careful not to overwhelm myself!

  • La Cocinella Italian Pre-School was easily the best Pre-school that I researched in the Melbourne area. Apart from the fact it is super cute, it was modern, colourful, inviting and easy!  As I've mentioned we are from regional NSW and have limited access to these types of wonderful resources.  I spoke to the lovely owner Dora and she was very accommodating to our needs.  We needed to be able to attend classes once a month as travelling 3 hrs to Melbourne each week was just not an option.  I can really see the HUGE importance of this type of exposure to the language.  I know I can't just rely on Nonna and Nonno! As kids get older they tend to lose enthusiasm towards things that they think are 'different'.  By associating with other kids speaking the same language and by playing in Italian, it should help make the learning experience less foreign and hopefully more accepted.  We will begin classes in Term 1 of next year when our baby will be about 4 months!  I have a feeling i'll be the one having more fun!!
This blog post explores alternative ways of learning a language to really help absorb the nuts and bolts and the 'exceptions' that form part of learning a new language.  Especially when trying to learn a new language in a 5 month period!!
